What to Wear During an Engagement Session | Long Island Wedding Photographer

Outfit Considerations for your Engagement Session

couple proposal rooftop new york city engagement photographer

One of the most important things you'll need to consider when planning your engagement session is what to wear. You want to look your best while also feeling comfortable, so it's important to choose the right outfit. Here are a few tips on what to wear during your session. With a little planning, you'll be sure to have amazing photos that capture your love and personality!

Choose a color palette that compliments your surroundings

Choosing a color palette that compliments your environment is one of the best ways to enhance your imagery. Do you want to contrast from your surroundings or compliment them? Wearing a yellow dress on the beach will definitely give a different look than muted blues or white.

Consider the season and location of your engagement session when choosing clothing

When planning your engagement session, it's important to take both the season and location into account when picking out your wardrobe. Opting for a sleeveless dress may look beautiful in springtime, but not so much if it's a chilly December day at the beach - you want to make sure both you and your fiancé are comfortable throughout the shoot. Consider doing a couple of outfit changes during the session according to where you go - layer up for outdoor spots and opt for something lighter indoors. Make sure each clothing choice fits the scenery while still showing off your individual personalities!

Coordinate Outfits, don't match outfits

Coordinating outfits can be much more stylish than simply matching them. You and your fiancé should look like you go together, but you shouldn't match. Try the mirror check: stand in front of a mirror together. If each of you think the other looks good, your outfits work!

Accessorize! But don't go overboard...

When it comes to making an outfit pop, accessories can be a great way to have fun. Don't shy away from a statement necklace, a scarf, a hat, etc. We won't use all of them at once, but accessories can dramatically change an image. Just make sure your accessories fit your style aesthetic. Ultimately, as long as you remember that less is more when it comes to accessorizing, you won’t go wrong.

Be sure to wear something you feel comfortable in

woman hugging man from behind under arbor

Wearing something that makes you feel comfortable can do wonders for your confidence and mental state. When you put on an outfit that brings out the best version of yourself, not only will you look great, but you will feel confident during your session.

Consider a casual and a formal outfit

couple-on-beach-long-island-wedding-photographer

When it comes to engagement session photos, couples should consider bringing an outfit change so they can get both a formal and casual look. Not only will this allow them to show off their individual style, but it also gives the opportunity for creating beautiful images that capture the couple’s love and personalities in a different way.

Clothing Fit

When planning your engagement session outfit, it's important to make sure that the clothes you choose fit well. Clothes that are too baggy will appear sloppy in photos and take away from the overall look of your images. On the other hand, form-fitting clothing can help enhance your silhouette and create a flattering effect on camera. It's best to opt for clothing that is neither too tight or too loose – just snug enough so it outlines your body shape without being overly constricting. You should feel confident from all angles - not just when you stand a certain way or from one side.

man holding woman in arms on beach with lighthouse in back

Picking the right outfit for your engagement session may seem daunting, but it doesn't have to be! By considering these suggestions, you will can gain the confidence needed for what may be your first formal images as an engaged couple. So go out there and choose a color palette, consider the season and location of your session, coordinate (don't match) your outfits, accessorize tastefully, wear something you feel comfortable in, consider the fit. You're sure to love the results!

Gatsby on the Ocean | Long Island Wedding Photographer | Christine + Rick

Long Island Beachfront Wedding Venue

Long Island has many unique characteristics, but the beach is possibly one of the most influential vistas that create the Long Island aesthetic. Gatsby on the Ocean is a wedding venue that features the epic view at a historically important location. With sweeping views of the ocean, Art Deco architecture, and history that is baked into Long Island Culture, Gatsby on the Ocean was a perfect location for Christine and Rick’s wedding.

Getting Ready

Christine and Rick were getting ready just a few feet away from each other - both of them incredibly excited. I loved bouncing between both rooms and feeling the energy. You could tell that you were going to be part of something special.

Rick was ready early, and he enjoyed time with his friends.

Christine looked beautiful. Her dress was stunning, and she was able to enjoy time in the beautiful bridal suite.

First Look

We chose a location for the first look that was a short walk from the entrance. But, with the wide-open vistas, Rick had to be in place for several minutes before Christine could join him. While Rick faced away, Christine was able to see him from the moment she walked outside, and that just made the excitement grown exponentially. They were able to enjoy an intimate moment in front of the venue.

Wedding Portraits

One of the benefits having a first look is the ability to take most of your wedding portraits before the ceremony. Christine and Rick went strait from the first look to portraits.

Ceremony

It was important to Christine to have an outdoor ceremony, and if the wedding was going to be an hour earlier or an hour later, it likely couldn’t have happened. But thankfully, they were able to have their wedding exactly where they wanted it and how they wanted it. Christine’s brother officiated a beautiful ceremony.

Reception

With a great group of energetic friends, it was obvious from the start that this party was going to be fun.

Much of the credit goes to Code Bleu. They are a phenomenal wedding band, and I couldn’t recommend them any more highly. Their sound was great, their sets paced the party perfectly, and they interacted with everyone.
